This list was prepared using files and dates from 2005-2006 school year.

We will receive 2007 - 2008 information during the year.

Dates will change.

Some scholarships may be canceled.

New scholarships will be added.

Look for updates in the PHS Newsletter,  listen for announcements,

and come into the College/Career Center.

The following  is a list of scholarships, awards, and opportunities that we, at Provo High School, have had experience with in the past.  Most applications are available in the College/Career Center.  Some applications are only available on the Internet.    Because it is impossible, it is not our intention to list all scholarships - - there are several good, free, web sites that have a more complete list of scholarships.

 

Oct 1  NATIONAL FOUNDATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT IN THE ARTS - Senior students with talent ithe following disciplines:       Music               Writing             Theater  Visual Arts      Dance

            Application fee $35.  Awards from $100 to $3,000 to be used at subscribing institutions.

Oct 15 HORATIO ALGER ASSOCIATION seeks to assist students who have demonstrated integrity, perseverance in overcoming adversity, strength of character, financial need, a good academic record, commitment to pursue a college education and a desire to contribute to society.  Senior students may submit or download an application at www.horationalger.org/scholarships

 

 

Oct 18       PSAT Test - NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP - Selection of National Merit semifinalists is based on PSAT scores during Junior year.  Juniors, sign up and pay the $12.00 fee at the Business Office.  Sophomores may also take the test as a preview.  Test to be given at 8:00 am in the west lunchroom.

 

Oct 30 COCA COLA SCHOLARSHIPS - National competition open to all students who will graduate in the 2005-2006 school year.  Selection will be based on the character, personal merit, and background of each individual.  2,000 semifinalists will be notified in December to submit further application.  50 scholarships worth $20,000 and 200 scholarship worth $4,000.  Applications on line at www.coca-colascholars.org  

 

Oct 30 THE PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS - This award will honor one student (any age)  from PHS who has demonstrated exceptional citizenship through exemplary, self-initiated community service.  The activity must be an individual activity or an individual’s significant leadership in a group service activity.  The selected student will receive a Certificate of Recognition and an opportunity to compete for state ($1,000) and national ($5,000) scholarships.  Applications in the College/Career Center or on line at  www.prudential.com/community/spirit   

 

Oct to  February US BANK’S Internet scholarship - will award thirty $1,000 scholarship to high school seniors planning  to attend college full-time next fall.  Scholarship award recipients are selected through a random drawing process.  Students can apply online @  www.usbank.com/studentbanking

 

Nov 6  STERLING SCHOLAR AWARD applications due.   This short preliminary application will be available to Seniors in the College/Career Center or from Department Chairs beginning   October 30, 2006.        Provo High School’s selection committee will make the selection of who will be our nominees & go to Regional and State level competition  in each of the following 13 categories:

Nov 1  TARGET STORES ALL-ROUND SCHOLARSHIPS - For High School Seniors who have completed substantial volunteer service.  Each of the approximately 978 Target stores will award two $1,000 scholarships.  Nationally Target will award five $10,000 scholarships.  For applications please see your local Target store or visit  http://www.target.com/

 

Nov 1  VOICE OF DEMOCRACY - national  “audio essay” contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).  Open to grades 9 -12.  See topic for 2005-2006 on application.   Awards at various levels - Each VFW department will send their first place recipient to Washington D.C.,  national 1st place award is $25,000. 

            FYI: this was won by a  PHS graduate, class of 2000.  

 

Nov 10      HOBY-HUGH O’BRIAN YOUTH FOUNDATION - Sophomores are eligible to apply.  PHS’s HOBY Ambassador will be an all-around outstanding sophomore.  Applicants will be judged by PHS’s selection committee on your GPA, leadership ability, sensitivity to others, and desire to communicate your knowledge to you peers.  The HOBY Ambassador will attend a weekend seminar somewhere in Utah next spring.  During the HOBY Leadership Seminar, one boy and one girl will be chosen to attend the World Leadership Congress.

 

 

 

Nov 15      *** The following three awards are to be selected by PHS based on leadership and service.  Seniors must complete a preliminary application to be considered for the following awards.

 

DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION - GOOD CITIZEN - Senior who best exemplifies outstanding qualities of leadership, dependability, service, and patriotism in their school, home and community.  PHS’s  Good Citizen  will complete further application for the state and national contest.  PHS’s Good Citizen will receive a pin & a certificate.  The division winner receives a $250 cash award.  The national DAR Good Citizens will be awarded $1,000, $2,000 or $5,000 scholarships.

 

DR MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARD - PHS’s nominee must have demonstrated commitment to social action, positive change, and cultural growth within his/her community.  Award presentation at Kingsbury Hall at the U of U in January of 2007.

 

PRINCIPAL’S  LEADERSHIP AWARD - PHS to nominate one senior that is an outstanding leader and in the top 20% of the class.  Nominee will be awarded a certificate of recognition and an opportunity to compete for one of 150 scholarships of $1,000 each.

 

TOYOTA COMMUNITY SCHOLARS PROGRAM - PHS to nominate a senior who has an outstanding academic record, is an effective leader, and has a well-documented record of service within and outside the school setting.  Nominee will be awarded a certificate of recognition and an opportunity of compete for one of 100 scholarships valued at $10,000 and $20,000,

 

 

Nov 15   UTAH HISPANIC BUSINESS LEADERSHIP FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP - must submit one-page personal statement, two letters of recommendation, etc.   Scholarship winners will be announced at the Utah Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Christmas Gala in Salt Lake City  December.

 

Nov 15   TEAM AMERICA ROCKETRY CHALLENGE - To win, each team must design, build, and fly a model rocket that carries one raw egg to an altitude as close to 800 feet as possible and stays airborne for as close to 45 seconds as possible.  Whoever is the closest to both and brings the egg back unbroken wins!  For more information visit www.rocketcontest.org     

 

Nov 18   INTEL SCIENCE TALENT SEARCH - Bright, ambitious, senior science, math, and engineering students doing scientific research.  Awards from $1,000 to $100,000 and a trip to Washington D.C.

Dec 1      SAE - SOCIETY OF AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERS - Applicants must intend to earn a degree in engineering.  At least a 3.5 GPA & 90% SAT or ACT.   33 scholarships of various amounts to be awarded.  Information and application at  www.sae.org/students/engschlr.htm 

 

Dec 1      SHOPKO SCHOLAR - ShopKo will be granting $1,000 scholarships to 100 students.  Recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, potential to succeed, leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, a statement of educational and career goals, and an outside appraisal. Application forms can be found at your local ShopKo Store or on their website at  www.schopko.com 

 

Dec 1      MILITARY ACADEMIES & ROTC programs - scholarship deadlines.

 

Dec 9      BURGER KING SCHOLARS - Senior with GPA of at least 2.5 who works an average of 15 hours per week, participates in community service and/or co-curricular activities, has financial need, and plans to attend college no later than fall 2007.

 

January    FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID

This is the application for all federal Grants, work study programs, and Student Loans.  It is also the first step for State Grants.

Guys, if you are 18 years old, you must register for the Selective Service before you are eligible for any federal Aid.  You can register at  www.sss.gov. It is now possible to register as early as 17 years old and it will be held until you are 18.

               Apply for Federal Aid early, but not before January 1, 2007.   Each school has a suggested deadline.

      FAFSA Worksheets will be available in the college/career center after the Christmas break

               Apply on the web at www.fafsa.ed.gov

 

To sign your electronic application on the web you must have a PIN, you & your parent can apply for one at  www.pin.ed.gov  before January.

 

Jan 6       UNITED STATES JCI (Junior Chamber International) SENATE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM - $1,000 grants will be awarded based on need, academics, leadership, references, and personal statement. 

 

Jan 10     ELKS - MOST VALUABLE STUDENT - Based on financial need, leadership and scholarship.

      Awards at local, state, and national levels. 

 

Jan 10     ELKS - SPECIAL NEEDS SENIORS  - Recipients of the award must have some Physical Handicap which has been deemed sufficient to impede or restrict normal progress.  State award of $1,500.  The number of awards given will depend upon the monies available.

 

Jan 10     ELKS - VOCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP - Must be pursuing an Associate Degree in Vocational Education.

 

Jan 10     SCHOOL COUNSELING SCHOLARSHIP - for Seniors who plan to become a school counselor or public education teacher.  Must have 2.5 GPA or higher and provide recommendations. 

 

Jan 15     BYU - GORDON B. HINCKLEY SCHOLARSHIP - The top 5% of  incoming BYU Freshman.  A separate application, available only from BYU, is required.  Tuition and a half for four years

 

Jan 15     EDUCATION IS FREEDOM - Renewable $2,000 scholarships for eight Utah senior B average students who have shown academic promise and leadership, but whose families cannot afford tuition and whose grades do not qualify them for traditional scholarship programs.  Apply at  www.educationisfreedom.org 

 

Jan 15     PHI DELTA KAPPA - For a high school senior with a career goal in education.  PDK BYU Chapter will award one $500 scholarship grant.  PDK International will award at least 43 international scholarship grants – Forty-two $1,000 grants and one $2,000 grant.  click students then scholarships for application which must be received by January 15.

 

Jan 20     MICRON SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY SCHOLARS PROGRAM - Senior with an ACT score of at least 30 and a GPA of at least 3.5, and demonstrated leadership who plan to major in Engineering.

Jan 20     SAM WALTON COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM - non-renewable  $1,000 scholarship   Information at  www.walmartfoundation.org  Application at http://www.scholarhipadministrators.net Applicants must use the access code (SWCS).  Application on line now. . . no need to wait until January.

 

Jan 30     UTAH ASSOCIATION OF EDUCATIONAL OFFICE PROFESSIONALS - $500 scholarship to a senior planning an office-related career.  Application at    www.uaeop.org 

 

Jan 31     DISCOVER CARD TRIBUTE AWARD SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM - for a Junior with a GPA at least 2.75 who excels in leadership, obstacles overcome and community service.   For full details and to apply visit   www.discovercard.com/tribute.htm

               CENTER FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP - one year tuition at UVSC                     for a senior with GPA of at least 3.0, leadership experience, essays,  letters of recommendation and a desire to be a part   of this great leadership program.

Feb 10    UVSC - CRYSTAL EAGLE/OUTSTANDING CITIZENSHIP AWARD - and half-tuition scholarship at UVSC for a senior with a minimum GPA of 3.0.  Must be planning to attend UVSC, have a desire to learn and share expertise, and have demonstrated qualities of leadership.

 

Feb 15 BEST BUY SCHOLARSHIP - $1,000 or $2,000 scholarships to three graduating high sschool seniors in each U.S. Congressional District.  Apply on line at  www.bestbuy.com  at the bottom of the homepage click on Community Relations.

 

February 15th is the Deadline for CES schools Admissions & Scholarships

               You need to complete the front of part 5 of the CES application and bring it to the College/Career Center for an official transcript to be mailed to CES admissions for any of these colleges.

 

Feb 22    UNIVERSITY OF UTAH - ACCESS  -   Designed to integrate young women into careers in  science and technology.  Learn to work in a research  laboratory at the University in the summer.  Stipend of $3,500 during the first year.

 

Feb 24    PFIZER - EPILEPSY SCHOLARSHIP -Rewards high school seniors who have epilepsy and have excelled both in and out of school.  25 one-year scholarships of $3,000 each.  Applications also available at  www.epilepsy-scholarship.com

 

Feb 27    AMERICA’S FREEDOM FESTIVAL - ESSAY CONTEST - 2006 theme is “God Bless America”.  Contests at all grade levels.   (Speech Contest April 7th Workshop) 

 

Feb 27    THE HORACE MANN SCHOLARSHIP - senior must be a child or legal dependent of a public school employee.  Applicant will be judged on a written essay, high school transcripts, school and community activities, and letters of recommendation.  Up to $20,000 payable over four years.  Application at   www.horacemann.com

 

Feb 27    WOMEN'S ITALIAN-AMERICAN CIVIC LEAGUE - Male or female, current graduate of Utah high school and of recent Italian descent (fifth  generation or less).  Selection based on ACT scores, high school academic performance, involvement in extra- curricular activities, and 300-word essay describing your Italian ancestry and how it has influenced you life. $1,000.  (applicants may also be interested in Italian-American Civic League Men's Chapter scholarship -  due April 1)

 

Feb 28    GIRLS STATE - AMERICAN LEGION  - Junior girls with leadership, good character, citizen of United States.  Judged on written application and oral interview.  One week conference in June at SUU in Cedar City.  Opportunity to receive 2 university credits in Political Science and a possible scholarship to SUU.

 

March ?  BOYS STATE - AMERICAN LEGION - Junior boys with leadership, good character, citizen of                 the United States. Judged on written application and oral interview.  One week conference in  June at Weber State University

 

Feb or March  EXPANDING YOUR HORIZONS - A conference for young women from middle school through high school  interested in career options in science, mathematics, and technology.  Conference to be held on a  Saturday,   from 7:30 am to 1:30 pm at UVSC.  Registration fee $20 includes lunch, materials, and a T-shirt.  Priority  Registration deadline to be announced.  Registration @  www.uvsc.edu/conted/equity

 

Feb or March  CAMP RISING SUN - is an eight week summer camp in upstate New York that brings together

outstanding students with diverse cultural and regional backgrounds.   Each year one boy and one girl are chosen to represent the “traditional Utah heritage” at the boy’s and girl’s camps.  The students selected should be mature 9th graders.

 

         March           ELKS, PROVO LADIES - MUSIC - The first 20 senior students to apply will be invited to the competition to be held in March.  Four cash prizes from the local lodge from $200 to $300.

March 1  PADGETT FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP - offers financial support to the dependents of owners of small, independent businesses . 

 

March 1  SUSAN W. CODA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - P.E.O. SISTERHOOD - Applicants must be women residents of Utah.  Recipients will be selected on the basis of current scholastic achievement (GPA of at least 3.8) and community involvement, as well as personal and professional goals.  Additionally, the applicants must provide proof of acceptance to an institution outside of Utah.  Scholarship amount has been over $4,000 in the past.

 

March  2    UTAH STATE OFFICE OF EDUCATION - UTAH SCIENCE TALENT SEARCH - is conducted each year for  Seniors to compete for trips and scholarships based on their research in science.   Any Utah student who enters the Intel Search in December is automatically an entrant in the Utah Science Talent Search.  Application must be received by deadline. 

 

 

March 3  GOT MILK? - Judging of senior nominees will be based on academic performance, athletic excellence, leadership, and community service.  25 winners will each receive a $7500 scholarship from Milk, and an opportunity to be pictured in a Milk Mustache ad.  Details and an application at   www.whymilk.com

 

March 3  YOUTH LINC - YOUNG HUMANITARIAN AWARD - The award will recognize Utah high school and undergraduate college or university students who excel in their efforts to give back to their communities.  One $5000 award and four $1000 awards from Larry H. Miller Charities and Chase.  Application in college/career center or at   www.youthlinc.org

 

March  8 APPLIED TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION TUITION AWARD - About 120 awards ranging  from $350 to $2,000 will be given to current seniors.  Each nominee must have a valid applied technology education occupational goal.  This is defined as participating in a post-high school ATE training program requiring two years or less for completion in the areas listed.   Eligible areas for awards are the following:     Agriculture, Business, Family & Consumer Sciences, Health Science & Health Technology, Information Technology, Marketing, Technology Education, and Trade & Technical.

 

March 8 COMCAST LEADERS AND ACHIEVERS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM - to reward students who have best demonstrated a commitment to community service, positive attitude, leadership skills and academic achievement.  As many as 1,500 one time $1,000 scholarships will be awarded.

 

March  8 DeVRY INSTITUTES - for seniors who are interested in attending DeVry.  For more information email to  outreach@devry.edu

 

 

March  9 Deadline to Register for the April 14th ACT Test.  Register on line at  www.actstudent.org

               Use the Provo High School code # 450-325 to have your results sent back to PHS.

 

 

Mar 10    YOUTH LINC YOUNG HUMANITARIAN AWARD will recognize Utah high school and undergraduate college/university students who excel in their efforts to give back to their communities. One $5,000 award and four $1,000 awards from Larry H. Miller Charities and Chase.  Applications must be received by Friday, March 10, 2006.  Details and applications at   www.youthlinc.org

 

 

Mar 12    ITT TECHNICAL INSTITUTE - For seniors who will major in Electronics or Drafting at ITT

 

Mar 15    UTAH TRAPPERS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP - High school seniors with intent to enroll fall, 2006 in a college program in Agriculture, Conservation, Biology, or related field.  GPA of at least 3.0.

 

Mar 15    ENGINEERING STATE AT UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY - for Juniors with a strong interest in math, science, or technology.  On USU campus for a week in June.  More information and applications are at  www.engineering.usu.edu

 

Mar 15    HILL AIR FORCE BASE SCHOLARSHIP - for dependents of Hill AFB employees, both military and civilian.  www.haa.hill.af.mil

 

Mar 15    UTAH ASSOCIATION OF EDUCATIONAL OFFICE PROFESSIONALS - $500 scholarship to a senior planning an office-related career or vocation. 

 

Mar 15    SUU JUNIOR HONORS ACADEMY - SUU will select 50 Juniors from applicants with a GPA of at least 3.75, a resume of accomplishments, letters of recommendation, and an essay.  Academy runs for a week in  July.  More details at  www.suu.edu/gha

 

Mar 23    UTAH STATE OFFICE OF EDUCATION - UTAH CAREER TEACHING SCHOLARSHIP / T.H. Bell - Recipients are required to pursue a teacher education program in a Utah school and actually teach in Utah  schools for a period equal to the time they receive  scholarship assistance.

The UCTS consists of a waiver (of tuition and fees at Utah public institutions and $825.00 per semester at  private institutions) to be used in Utah institutions of  higher education for a period not exceeding 12 quarters  or eight semesters.

 

Mar 23    UTAH STATE OFFICE OF EDUCATION - ROBERT C BYRD - Purpose is to promote student excellence and achievement and recognize exceptionally able students who show promise of continued excellence.  Must have been accepted at an institution of higher education.  $1500

 

Mar 25    UTAH SOCIETY OF PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS - $1,000 scholarship for a senior planning an engineer career.  Requirements and application at  www.uspeonline.com

 

Mar 29    UTAH COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION - $500 scholarship to one PHS senior with a strong work ethic, GPA of at least 3.0, community service, club/group involvement, financial need, and credit union membership.   Applications are now online at .  Be sure to click on the Bulldog.  This is a wonderful new website designed to also teach and be a resource for financial literacy skills.

 

Mar 29    UTAH SPORTS HALL OF FAME FOUNDATION (OLD TIME ATHLETES ASSOCIATION) - PAUL REAM - Each high school in Utah may nominate one boy, one girl, & one Native American (if applicable) for scholarship consideration.  Judging will be based on academic scholarship, personal character, financial need, leadership qualities and interest, and involvement in athletic activities.  Eight $2,000 scholarships.

 

Mar 30    THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE of Medical-Dental Technology is offering a $500 scholarship to an outstanding student with a GPA of 3.3 or above that will be attending The American Institute in either Provo or St. George.

 

Mar 30    BURGER KING (HB group) - $1,000 scholarship to a PHS senior based on academics, financial need, extracurricular activities, and essay of your career goals.

 

Mar 30    GLOBAL AUTOMOTIVE AFTERMARKET SYMPOSIUM (GAAS) scholarships of $1,000 will be awarded whit priority being given to those who pursue a career in the automotive aftermarket.  Applications in the college/career center or at   www.automotivescholarships.com

 

Mar 30    KFC COLONEL’S SCHOLARS - Graduating seniors who plans to stay in-state for college. Maintains at least 2.75 GPA.  U.S. citizen or permanent resident.  Needs financial assistance for college.  Has an entrepreneurial spirit.   Applications at   www.kfcscholars.org

 

 

Mar 30    NFIB EDUCATION FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP - to identify and reward at least 100 students nationwide with a $1,000 scholarship.   Details and application at  www.nfib.com/education

 

Mar 30    SONS OF UTAH PIONEERS - TOMORROW’S PIONEERS - for High School Seniors who have overcome significant adversity to attain academic success.  The applicant must have exemplified through specific acts in their lives the ideals and character traits of true pioneers of faith, courage endurance, and family values.  Must have recommendation from teacher, counselor, or principal.

 

Mar 30    THE UTAH ASSOCIATION OF INDEPENDENT INSURANCE AGENTS (UAIIA) AND THE PROPERTY CASUALTY UNDERWRITERS SOCIETY, UTAH CHAPTER (CPCU) - three $1,000 scholarships to Utah seniors who have maintained at least a 3.0 GPA and are active in extra-curricular activities through school, church, community or work.  One scholarship awarded to a student pursuing an insurance career, the others to a students  pursuing insurance or business degrees.  www.uaiia.org

 

Mar 30    WESTERN WYOMING SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP - If you have an interest in attending WWCC .let 

            Mrs. Allan in the college/career center know that you would like to be nominated for this scholarship.    

 

Mar 31    UVSC FRESHMAN COHORT - Application if you have a desire to be appointed to a position within UVSC’s Freshman Cohort with a variety of participation and leadership opportunities with ASUVSC.  Based on your performance and participation partial tuition reimbursement is available.  

 

April 1     MEN’S ITALIAN AMERICAN CIVIC LEAGUE - applicant must be of recent Italian ancestry and a 2006 high school graduate.  Award based on ACT GPA and extracurricular involvement..

 

April 13   Conway B & Elaine W Sonne Scholarship at USU - This scholarship is available annually to graduating high school seniors showing talent and potential for continued leadership.  (Must be a US citizen).

 

April 13     ELKS - TEENAGER OR STUDENT OF THE MONTH - Nominees judged on the basis of multiple achievement: character, leadership, service, citizenship  and scholastic. Small cash award and an invitation for student & parents to Awards Banquet.  They usually award a few to each Utah County High School.

 

April 13   MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL PLAYERS ALUMNI - UTAH CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP - Seniors throughout Utah can compete each year for scholarships for study at any accredited U.S. post-secondary institution.  Scholarships range fro $500 - $1000.  Selection is based on consideration of leadership, character and achievement both inside and outside the classroom and on financial need.

 

April 13   UTAH COUNTY REPUBLICAN WOMEN SCHOLARSHIP - $500 to a female senior who will graduate this year and has achieved academic excellence, has financial need, demonstrates an interest in politics and holds to Republican Party views.

 

April 14   UNIVERSITY OF UTAH - UTAH ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS - HS may nominate three candidates.  Students with unique broad ranging strengths who will contribute significantly to the University of Utah community. Admissions index of 106 minimum.  $1,000 one time award.

 

April 20   UVSC - ABRAHAM LINCOLN FREEDOM SCHOLARSHIP - Full year, half-tuition scholarship for a senior minority student who will be attending UVSC in the Fall of 2006.  Recipient must also be a U.S. citizen, a good example, maintain at least a “C” average at UVSC, and be willing to help coordinate a program for the success of all ethnic students.

 

April 24     BYU-Idaho (RICKS COLLEGE) - JULIE BEAR - In memory a Julie Bear, '90 PHS graduate.  For a female student of  PHS with high moral character and academic promise who will attend BYU-Idaho.  Those girls that have been accepted to BYU-I will be invited to apply.  Amount depends on funding.

 

April 24   MANGUM-LEWIS SCHOLARSHIP - The top male students from PHS that have been accepted to BYU will be invited to apply for this scholarship. Selection will be based on scholarship, character, personality, service in school and community, and need.
